“Bring on the Measuring Cup!”

With strawberry season waning, I’ve moved on to fresh, local raspberries and blueberries (and today Daniel and I each had our first wild blackberry of the season). Delicious. However, I wanted to share this ‘behind the scenes’ look at dessert preparation in my diabetes life. I’ve written before about the importance of carb counting. The extra effort I make to count my carbs as precisely as possible has made a huge difference in my diabetes management. For me, weighing my strawberries and measuring my ice cream is the difference between a post-meal reading of 14.3 and one of 8.7. Given all the unpredictable factors of this disease, I like to control what elements I can. And if a measuring cup is going to stand between me and better control, I say, “Bring on the measuring cup!” Just make sure it’s full of ice cream.
